I haven't been to an optometrist in a while. What can I expect at my appointment?
At Southwestern Eye Care, we will perform an eye health examination for all ages to detect any potentially vision-threatening condition. A typical exam for adults and seniors consists of these tests:
- General Health and Medications
- Specific Eye Health History
- Refraction for Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses
- Perimetry Testing for Peripheral Vision
- Macular Pigment Density
- Color Vision
- Binocular Visual Efficiency
- Depth Perception
- Eye Muscle Coordination
- Neurological Pupil Testing
- Tonometry for Eye Pressure
- Detailed Ocular Health Assessment
- Staining Drops for Surface Disease
- Dilated Exam of the Entire Retina
What is a pediatric exam?
The American Optometric Association highly recommends that children in their first year of life have a vision and eye health screening performed by a licensed eye specialist. An exam, once per year after that, is also highly recommended. At Southwestern Eye Care, we have all of the equipment and experience necessary to perform these exams. Using special techniques and gentle care, we test children of all ages for the common conditions of astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia. We will also dilate the pupils and perform an extensive eye health exam to rule out diseases that can occur from birth, such as amblyopia or "lazy eye," strabismus or "crossed eyes," congenital cataracts, retinopathy of prematurity, obstructed tear ducts, and ocular allergies.
What is an adult exam?
All adults should have an eye exam that includes eye health testing at least once every year or two. At our office, we perform all of the testing recommended by the AOA and several other tests included in our comprehensive exam at no extra charge.
What is a senior exam?
Because many eye diseases start later in life, we place special emphasis on diagnosing and managing the many forms of common geriatric eye diseases such as glaucoma, dry eyes, macular degeneration, and cataracts. Our doctors have extensive experience in managing eye conditions that typically afflict senior citizens. We use retinal imaging equipment and automated optic nerve analysis to assist in diagnosing many of these problems.
